The Nowa Wieś Community
The Nowa Wieś Community
The Nowa Wieś
Community is one of the biggest in the Pomeranian (Pomorskie) Voivodenship. The population
of the commune is over 13 thousand
inhabitants who reside on the area of 270,39 km2. The average density is 48 persons per km2 The Community is
situated in the north-west part of the Pomeranian Voivodenship, in the central
part of the Lębork District. The Community is located in the River Łeba valley
between the Kashubian
Lake District heights and
the Kashubian Shorelad.
In its north part it is
surrounded by a vast forest complex which is the part of the “the Slupia Valley”
Landscape Park. The region is topographically diverse and hence attractive both in terms of climate and the picturesque scenery.
CHARACTERISTICS
The important
communication roads run across the community area : the main road No A6 from Gdańsk to Szczecin,
the province road No 214 from Łeba to
Bytów via Lębork. There are also two
railroads running across the community, the first of them Szczecin-Gdynia,
another one from Lębork to Łeba. The main village in the community is Nowa Wieś
Lęborska with its population of 2 ,000. Nowa Wieś is the main local
service centre, the major offices,
public utilities and local government units are situated here. 37 villages in
the Nowa Wieś Lęborska Community are divided into 18 smaller administrative
units called sołecwo. Due to numerous historical changes and predicaments in
the district our community is a kind of a melting pot, mixture of two cultures
– the Kashubian one and the borderline
culture of the Polish eastern regions. The area comprises 60% of farmland and 30% of
woodland. The next 10% is the built-up area. We are a typical rural
commune with predominantly agricultural
economy.
THE DIVERSE RELIEF
The diverse
relief and the vast, open
landscape create picturesque scenery and
encourage visitors to take
part in a variety of recreation
activities - hiking, cycling or horse riding. The river network in the area,
mainly the Łeba river, creates convenient conditions for going kayaking and
equally for other water sports. Anglers
are more than welcome to Redkowice and its ponds. Those who are fond of
spending their free time in a quiet place by the lake are recommended to visit Lake Lubowidz,
full of fish, protected as a zone of
silence and, additionally, bordered by a circle of woods rich in mushrooms.
This is a real Eden
for anglers and dedicated mushroom pickers.
Lake Lubowidz can be
also perceived as a tempting offer for those who are keen on active recreation , they can choose from
sailing courses, diving trainings and regattas at the end of a sailing season.
CLEAN ENVIRONMENT
Owing to 8,000 hectares of
woodland the environment In our
community is so clean . Meeting a stork, a heron, a swan or a crane is very frequent in
the vicinity. Chocielewko village hosts the reserve of grey heron colony. The
peat bog called Black
Swamp – Karolinki is situated near Żelazkowo village. The peat and
peloid occurring there are claimed
to have healing properties. Tourists have a chance to visit
24 registered monuments of nature, e.g. small-leaved lindens in Krępa
Kaszubska, Tawęcino and Redkowice, sycamore maples in Janowice and Janowiczki, Swedish whitebeam in Krępa
Kaszubska and pedunculate oaks planted in an old park previously belonging
to a manor house in Redkowice.
While wandering
in the area an
interested tourist should pay attention
to some distinctive post-glacial erratic blocks. The stone called “The Wide Stone”, which
lies near the road from Kębłowo to
Chocielewko, is 2.43 meters high above
the ground and its circumference is 16.25 meters. The
surface of the block is full of drill holes, witnesses of numerous unsuccessful attempts of splitting it. One of the legends says that
there is an enchanted castle underneath and a person to break a spell will indisputably
become a ruler of both the castle and the
legendary kingdom. That seems to be an ideal place for monarchists!
There is also another
erratic block, famous for the black letter inscription “Bismarck”
on it. It can be found in a field between Redkowice and Chocielewko. Its
circumference is 8.60
metres and it is 3.20 metres wide.
Because of its huge size it is traditionally called “The Stone of Witch” and
claimed to be a site of sorceresses’ gatherings.
The number of cycling enthusiasts
has been increasing
rapidly over the last years and therefore we have decided to prepare a variety
of tracks for them . This offer equally involves recreation and visiting places
of the unique tourist values.
We recommend following routes:
-1. Małoszyce – Dziechlino – Leśnice.
2. Leśnice –
Dolne Chocielewko – Górne Chocielewko – Czarnówko – Nowa Wieś
3. Mosty – Ługi – Zajazd Kaszubski (Kashubian Inn) – Dąbrówka Kamienna –
Leśniczówka (Forester’s lodge) Lubonie – Lubowidz
You can go cycling, you can
walk or run as well. We invite sportsmen – Nordic Walkers, runners to participate in annual sport
events. Each year, in the end of May the Polish National Cross Country Running
is organized in Obliwice along with the National Run of Village Administrators (sołtys). On the third
Sunday of June long-distance runners from different countries participate in
the International Marathon commemorating a
great promoter of running Tomasz Hopfer.
The route has been set from Lębork to Nowa Wieś Lęborska.
Additionally, we recommend a cycling/walking track,
which is a nature-didactic track founded by Lębork Forest
Inspectorate in Leśnice. The length of the track is 3.5km and hiking or cycling along it may give us a unique
opportunity of recognising and learning the mysteries of the forest natural richness. The
tracks begins next to the Leśnice Primary School
and a tourist keen of broadening their
knowledge about nature will find 13 didactic
boards placed along the path. There is also possibility of taking a rest
in a pleasant place arranged for
lighting an open fire and what is more, those visitors who cultivate scout principles may acquire some skill points.
We also
suggest visiting churches
located in our
community as well as various roadside shrines. The churches which may attract
tourists and give them a peaceful and quiet moment of rest and calm are
situated in Łebień (built in1891), Janowice (1882), Garczegorze (1840),
Chocielewko (1918) and in Leśnice and Nowa Wieś Lęborska (both from the
beginning of 20th century). The traces of the not distant past can
be found in Krępa Kaszubska. There, in the graveyard lie the former prisoners of the Nazi
Concentration Camp in Stutthof – the victims of a cruel war crime : “March of Death”. This episode from the Second World War is commemorated in
the Hall -A Tribute to Death March Victims.
A manor house and a baroque park founded at the
end of 18th century are situated in the village of Leśnice.
The forest park
in Leśnice, which comes from the turn of the 19th and 20th
century, is definitely worth seeing.
Tourists are counselled to visit two manor houses from the 18th century ( Janowice
and Darźewo) .The over two-hundred-years-old
Cemetery Chapel is placed in the village of Garczegorze.
Aannually, a variety of
events takes place in our community . One can choose from a number of
sport, cultural and recreational events
The wonderful opportunity to meet other residents
of the vicinity are the Great Festival
in Garczegorze and the Wilkowo’s May Picnic. Old traditions and customs are
cultivated in Redkowice where the Festival of Linden
Trees is held as well as the celebration
of St John’s
Night – Sobótka. Sport and recreational events take place in each
sołectwo . Social activities is a merit of local activists and
non-governmental organisations and associations. Lately the Circles of Country Housewives have become very popular again
with modern housewives who are not only outstanding cooks ( trying their homemade
bread and waffles should be obligatory) but they also play a part in
tournaments, redecorate clubs and take care of children. They are capable of
changing their neighbourhood.
The great local
artists live in the district. Janina Muller from Nowa Wieś is a poet and a painter. Krystyna Gabryelska
from Janowice paints and sculptures. The biggest wooden ostrich in Poland was
sculpted by her. It is located in front of the Community Culture Centre in Nowa
Wieś. The place also houses paintings of both artists.
